Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and they did so, as Yahweh had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent.

Egypt was the land ruled by Pharaoh, where Israel was enslaved and where Moses and Aaron confronted him before his court. The Nile, Egypt’s vital river and source of agricultural life, would soon become central to God’s signs of judgment against Pharaoh’s hardened resistance.
