Egypt was the land ruled by Pharaoh, where Israel lived in bondage; the Nile was its central river and a vital source of water, food, and agriculture. In this plague, God’s striking of the Nile exposed Egypt’s dependence on it and demonstrated his authority over Pharaoh and Egypt’s gods.
