Egypt was the powerful kingdom where Israel was enslaved, and Pharaoh’s refusal to obey God forms the immediate setting of Moses and Aaron’s commission. The Nile, Egypt’s central life-giving river, would soon become a sign of God’s judgment over Egypt’s gods and power.
