Babylon was the Mesopotamian empire to which many Judeans were exiled, where Ezekiel delivered this sign to fellow exiles. Jerusalem, Judah’s covenant capital and site of the temple, was under Babylonian siege; its coming fall would confirm Ezekiel’s warning and summon the exiles to sober recognition of the Lord’s judgment.
