These are major ancient Near Eastern kingdoms and peoples: Assyria and Babylon in Mesopotamia, Elam east of Babylonia, Meshech in Anatolia, Edom south of Judah, and Egypt along the Nile. In Ezekiel’s lament, Egypt joins these once-feared powers in the grave, showing God’s judgment over all proud nations.
