But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.

Jerusalem, in Judea, was the site of God’s temple, destroyed when Babylon (Babylonia) conquered Judah. “Beyond the River” refers to the Persian province west of the Euphrates, where returned Judean exiles were rebuilding the temple under Persian rule.
