There went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinim, to Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king.

Babylon in Babylonia was the former imperial center from which many Jews had been exiled; by Ezra’s time it lay within Persia’s empire. “Beyond the River” was the Persian province west of the Euphrates, including Jerusalem, where Ezra traveled with other returnees in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes.
