Ahava was a gathering place by a canal in Babylonia, within the Persian province called Beyond the River; from there Ezra prepared the return journey to Jerusalem. Casiphia was apparently a nearby settlement or district where temple servants lived, so Ezra sent for Levites and Nethinim needed for Jerusalem’s restored worship.
