Then we departed from the river Ahava on the twelfth [day] of the first month, to go to Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was on us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy and the bandit by the way.

Ahava was a gathering place, likely near a canal in Babylonia, where Ezra assembled returning exiles before departing for Jerusalem. Casiphia supplied Levites for the journey, while “Beyond the River” denotes the Persian province west of the Euphrates through which they traveled under God’s protection.
