yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through the faith of Jesus Christ, even we believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by the works of the law.

Antioch in Syria was the church where Paul confronted Peter over fellowship with Gentile believers, the immediate setting for Galatians 2:16. Jerusalem was the center of the early Jewish-Christian leadership, whose recognition of Paul’s Gentile mission underscored that justification is by faith in Christ, not works of the law.
