Canaan was the land God promised to Abraham’s descendants, roughly corresponding to the southern Levant along the eastern Mediterranean. Though Genesis 17:25 records Ishmael’s circumcision, the covenant sign was given within Abraham’s household in the land where God would establish his promised covenant line through Isaac.
