Ammon was the territory east of the Jordan Valley associated with the descendants of Ben-ammi, Lot’s younger daughter’s son; Genesis 19:38 explains the origin of the Ammonites. The Jordan Valley, where Lot had settled near Sodom, frames the setting from which these later neighboring peoples emerged.
