Hebron, also called Kiriath-arba, was a major settlement in Canaan near Mamre, where Abraham had long resided. Machpelah, near Mamre, became significant when Abraham purchased its cave as Sarah’s burial place, providing his family’s first legally owned foothold in the promised land.
