Mesopotamia, “between the rivers,” refers here to the Aramean region around Haran in northern Syria, where Abraham’s relatives, including Nahor’s household, lived. The Negeb was the dry southern region of Canaan where Abraham resided; the servant’s journey links Isaac’s future marriage to Abraham’s covenant family rather than the Canaanites.
