Gerar was a Philistine city in the southern coastal region of Canaan, where Isaac settled in obedience to God’s command rather than going to Egypt, the land to the southwest associated with famine refuge. The Valley of Gerar and Rehoboth nearby mark later stages of Isaac’s search for water and peaceful settlement.
