Bethel, formerly called Luz, was a Canaanite site in the central hill country where Jacob named the place after his dream and God’s promise. Jacob was traveling from Canaan toward Haran in Paddan-aram, the region of his mother’s family, making Bethel a significant turning point in his journey.
