Bethel, formerly Luz, was the Canaanite site where Jacob encountered God and vowed worship; it lay in the land God promised Abraham’s family. Haran in Paddan-aram was Jacob’s destination in northern Mesopotamia, while Canaan was the promised land to which he hoped God would return him safely.
