“The East” refers broadly to the lands east of Canaan, especially Mesopotamia; Haran was a city in upper Mesopotamia where Abraham’s relatives, including Laban, lived. Jacob’s presence there explains his dependence on Laban and the setting of Laban’s deception in giving Leah instead of Rachel.
