“East” refers broadly to the lands east of Canaan, especially the Aramean region of Mesopotamia. Haran, in upper Mesopotamia, was Laban’s home and the setting where Jacob married Leah; there Levi was born, reflecting Leah’s hope that Jacob would become attached to her.
