After meeting Esau, Jacob declined to accompany him south toward Mount Seir in Edom and instead traveled from Paddan-aram through Canaan to Succoth, east of the Jordan, before reaching Shechem in central Canaan. These movements show Jacob’s return to the land God had promised his fathers.
