Jacob came in peace to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan Aram; and encamped before the city.

Returning from Paddan-aram in Mesopotamia, Jacob had parted from Esau near Mount Seir, Esau’s territory southeast of Canaan, and paused at Succoth east of the Jordan. He then arrived safely at Shechem in central Canaan, marking his reentry into the land God had promised his family.
