Egypt was the Nile-centered kingdom ruled by Pharaoh, where Joseph is publicly elevated to authority; the Nile sustained its agriculture and makes the coming famine especially significant. Heliopolis, likely Joseph’s later family connection through Potiphera’s priestly household, was a major Egyptian religious center near the Nile delta.
