Canaan was the land where Jacob’s family lived, later identified with the promised land; Egypt was the powerful Nile-based kingdom where Joseph governed during famine. The brothers’ journey from Canaan to Egypt brought them before Joseph, and Reuben’s words connect their present distress there with their earlier sin against him.
