Canaan was the land where Jacob and his family lived, roughly corresponding to parts of the southern Levant. Egypt, southwest of Canaan along the Nile, had grain during the famine, so Jacob sent Joseph’s brothers there to buy food, advancing God’s providential preservation of the family.
