Canaan was the land where Jacob’s family lived, later identified with the promised land of Israel; from there his sons traveled south to Egypt during the famine. Egypt, a powerful Nile-based kingdom, was the place where grain was available and where Joseph, though unrecognized by his brothers, governed their access to food.
