Canaan was the land where Jacob’s family lived, facing a severe famine. Egypt, governed by Pharaoh and supplied with grain through Joseph’s administration, was the place Jacob’s sons had to return to buy food, making their dependence on God’s providence and Joseph’s terms unavoidable.
