Canaan was Jacob’s family homeland, while Egypt was the land where Joseph had risen to power and could provide famine relief. Goshen, likely in Egypt’s northeastern Nile Delta near the district later called Rameses, was the fertile area Pharaoh assigned to Joseph’s family for settlement and livestock.
