As for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan in the way, when there was still some distance to come to Ephrath, and I buried her there in the way to Ephrath (the same is Bethlehem)."

Paddan-aram was the region in Mesopotamia where Jacob lived with Laban; Canaan was the promised land, including Luz (Bethel) and Ephrath, later called Bethlehem. Jacob recalls Rachel’s death and burial near Bethlehem while he himself is now in Egypt, explaining her absence from the family burial site.
