Babylon was the chief city of southern Mesopotamia, in present-day Iraq, and Chaldea was the surrounding southern region from which Babylon’s ruling dynasty arose. Isaiah’s oracle announces God’s judgment against this powerful imperial center, though Babylon’s later prominence also foreshadows its role in Judah’s exile.
