Babylon was the great city of southern Mesopotamia, in present-day Iraq, and Chaldea referred to the surrounding Babylonian region and its people. Isaiah’s oracle portrays this powerful empire as facing God’s judgment, so severe that its population and survivors will become exceedingly scarce.
