Ashdod was a Philistine city on the Mediterranean coast, while Assyria was the dominant Mesopotamian empire advancing westward. Cush (south of Egypt, often Nubia) and Egypt were hoped-for allies against Assyria, but Isaiah’s sign-act warned Judah that both would be conquered and prove unable to save.
