behold, I will cause the shadow on the steps, which is gone down on the dial of Ahaz with the sun, to return backward ten steps. So the sun returned ten steps on the dial whereon it was gone down.

Though Assyria is not named in this verse, it was the dominant empire threatening Judah during Hezekiah’s reign. Isaiah’s sign involving the shadow’s retreat assured the king in Jerusalem that the Lord governed creation and would fulfill his promise to preserve Judah from Assyrian danger.
