Babylon, the great city on the Euphrates in southern Mesopotamia, was the capital of Chaldea, a region whose ruling dynasty dominated the Neo-Babylonian Empire. In this oracle, Babylon’s proud self-confidence and occult wisdom are condemned, foreshadowing God’s judgment on the empire that would later exile Judah.
