Therefore shall evil come on you; you shall not know the dawning of it: and mischief shall fall on you; you shall not be able to put it away: and desolation shall come on you suddenly, which you don't know.

Babylon, the great city on the Euphrates in Mesopotamia, was the capital of the Chaldean (Neo-Babylonian) empire in southern Mesopotamia. Isaiah addresses this proud imperial power as doomed: its wealth, sorcery, and apparent security cannot avert the sudden judgment God declares.
