Babylon was the great Mesopotamian city on the Euphrates, and Chaldea the surrounding southern Babylonian region from which its ruling dynasty came. Isaiah’s audience would face exile there; God’s refining “in the furnace of affliction” refers to His disciplinary preservation of Israel through that captivity.
