Babylon, in southern Mesopotamia along the Euphrates River (in modern Iraq), was the imperial capital that conquered Judah and carried many Israelites into exile; Chaldea refers to the Babylonian land and its ruling people. Isaiah’s call to leave Babylon announces God’s promised deliverance of his people from captivity and summons them to proclaim his redemption.
