Jeremiah addresses Jerusalem, Judah’s capital, at the Potsherd Gate near the Valley of Hinnom, south of the city. Topheth, a site in that valley associated with child sacrifice, symbolizes Judah’s covenant-breaking; God declares it will instead be called the Valley of Slaughter because of coming judgment.
