Babylon, in Chaldea (southern Mesopotamia, modern Iraq), was the empire that deported Judah’s people from Jerusalem; Jeremiah addresses these exiles as those whom God would restore spiritually. Jerusalem was Judah’s covenant center, while Egypt represented the alternative refuge sought by those resisting Babylonian rule.
