These kingdoms and city-states surround Judah across Egypt, the Levant, Arabia, Transjordan, Mesopotamia, and Persia; Sheshach is a cryptic name for Babylon. Jeremiah’s cup-of-wrath oracle declares that Judah’s God judges not Jerusalem alone but the nations, culminating in Babylon, the imperial power soon to invade Judah.
