Babylon was the Mesopotamian empire that had carried Judah into exile, the crisis behind Hananiah’s disputed promise of a quick restoration. Gibeon, a town northwest of Jerusalem, was Hananiah’s hometown, identifying him as the prophet whose broken yoke symbol Jeremiah was commanded to replace.
