Babylon was the Mesopotamian imperial capital whose king, Nebuchadnezzar, would subjugate Judah and surrounding nations under God’s decree. Gibeon, a town northwest of Jerusalem, was Hananiah’s hometown; his false promise of Babylon’s swift defeat directly contradicted Jeremiah’s warning of Babylonian domination.
