But it happened, when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, that we said, Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the army of the Syrians; so we dwell at Jerusalem.

Babylon was the leading city of the Chaldean empire in Mesopotamia, whose armies, joined by Aramean raiders, threatened Judah. Jerusalem, Judah’s capital, became the refuge of the Rechabites, explaining why they temporarily lived there despite their customary nomadic life.
