Jerusalem was Judah’s capital, where Baruch publicly read Jeremiah’s scroll at the New Gate, a temple-area entrance. Babylon, the dominant Mesopotamian empire, was the power whose coming judgment Jeremiah’s message announced, making Jehoiakim’s destruction of the scroll an act of resistance to God’s warning.
