After Babylon’s conquest of Jerusalem, Gedaliah governed the remaining Judeans from Mizpah, north of the ruined city, while Jeremiah joined them there after being released at Ramah. Ammon, Moab, and Edom were neighboring peoples, and Babylon/Chaldea was the empire whose victory had scattered Judah’s survivors among surrounding lands.
