Jerusalem was Judah’s ruined capital after Babylon’s conquest; Babylon was the Mesopotamian empire that had deported many Judeans. Egypt, southwest of Judah, was the refuge some remaining people considered seeking, prompting their request for Jeremiah to ask God’s direction.
