Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.

Bethany, near Jerusalem on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, was where Jesus had raised Lazarus, intensifying opposition from Judean authorities. Jerusalem was the religious center of Judea; Ephraim, a town in the hill country north of Jerusalem, offered Jesus a temporary place of withdrawal.
