Bethany, near Jerusalem on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, was where Jesus had recently stayed and raised Lazarus; Galilee was his northern home region. As he enters Jerusalem, the city of Israel’s temple and royal center, the crowd hails him with Zion’s messianic language, identifying Jerusalem as the city awaiting its king.
