Capernaum was a fishing town on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus made his home base during much of his ministry. The disciples were crossing this lake toward Capernaum when Jesus came to them on the water; Tiberias, a nearby city on the western shore, identifies the broader region.
