Joppa was a Mediterranean port in Israel’s coastal region, where Jonah found a ship bound for Tarshish. Nineveh was the major Assyrian city to the northeast; Jonah’s attempt to sail westward from Joppa vividly displays his refusal to carry God’s message to Nineveh.
