Nineveh was the great Assyrian city on the Tigris River in present-day northern Iraq, known as the center of a powerful and often brutal empire. Its size and significance heighten the force of Jonah’s renewed obedience: God sends him to proclaim His warning even to Israel’s formidable Gentile enemy.
